The Thinker
The piece of sculpture called “O Pensador” (The Thinker) is one of the most beautiful statutes of Tchokwe origin, representing today a reference of the culture concerning all Angolans, as it is a symbol of the national culture. It represents the figure of an elderly person that could be a man or a woman. Designed in a symmetric profile, with the face slightly bent down, it expresses an intentional subjectivism as, in Angola, the elderly represent wisdom and enjoy a privileged status. The elderly represents the wisdom, experience of long years and knowledge of the secrets of life.
Queen Anna Nzinga
Queen Anna Nzinga (c. 1583 – December 17, 1663), also known as Njinga Mbande or Ana de Sousa Nzinga Mbande, Rainha Ginga, was a 17thcentury queen (muchino a muhatu) of the Ndongo and Matamba Kingdoms of the Mbundu people, in Angola. She came to power as an ambassador after demonstrating an ability to tactfully defuse foreign crises, as she regained control of the Portuguese fortress of Ambaca. Being the sister of the king, Ngola (King) Mbande, she naturally had an influence on political decisions, when the king assigned her to represent him in peace negotiations with bordering countries. Nzinga assumed control as regent of his young son, Kaza. Today she is remembered in Angola for her political and diplomatic acumen, as well as her brilliant military tactics. Afterwards, her name was attributed to the major and only straight street in Luanda, as well as to a building (Edifício Rainha Ginga) located in that same street. Her royal title in the kimbundu language, Ngola, was the name used by the Portuguese to denominate that region (Angola).
The Imbondeiro tree
The Imbondeiro tree (“baobab”) is a symbol of Africa, especially in Angola. It is used in rituals, medicine, it inspires poets and singers, protects mothers and children and it is a rich tree.
From the Baobab, besides the mucua (fruit rich in vitamins and minerals), the seed, flower, leaf, bark, trunk and root are used. The Baobab is a "complete plant" in which everything contained therein "is precious."
In Angola, it is born further west in the provinces of Luanda, Kwanza-Norte, Kwanza-Sul, Malange, Zaire, Benguela, Namibe, Cunene, Cabinda and Huila.
An adult Baobab can live up to three thousand years and withstands all types of climates.
Black Palanca
Black Palanca (Hippotragus niger variani) is a rare antelope subspecies that exists only in Angola. The animal is endangered and is a symbol of the country, appearing even as a nickname for the National Football Team.
The Cubango River
The Cubango River (formerly spelled Okovango or Okovanggo) is a river in southwest Africa which forms part of the natural border between Angola and Namibia, and then flows into Botswana, draining into the Moremi Game Reserve. It is the fourth-longest river system in southern Africa, running southeastward for 1,600 km (990 mi), at the end of which origins one of the biggest natural sanctuaries: the Okavango Delta already in Botswana territory. The Cubango River is endorheic, this is does not have an outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties in the Kalahari Desert, known as the Okavango Delta or Okavango Alluvial Fan.
Macronesia
Macronesia is a collection of four archipelagos in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the continents of Europe and Africa. Each archipelago is made up of a number of Atlantic oceanic islands formed by seamounts on the ocean floor with peaks above the ocean's surface. The Macronesian islands belong to three countries: Portugal, Spain and Cabo Verde.
Geologically, Macronesia is part of the African Plate, including the Azores, which mark its edge at the meeting point with the African, Eurasian and American Plates.
